    Wireless pizza!

Wireless Pizza - Image courtesy of Kittikun Atsawintarangkul / FreeDigitalPhotos.netWhen a local pizzeria recently decided to upgrade their network to provide secure wireless guest services for their restaurant the task fell to 3pop.  Prior to the upgrade the restaurant had been sharing its wireless Internet access directly off of their Internet service provider’s (ISP) wireless DSL router.  The problem with this was that anyone connecting to their wireless network had some level of access to the administrative interface of the DSL router–which wasn’t really the best way to roll.  Moreover, behind the router was another router that was put in place to secure the restaurant’s computers, credit card processing system, and video surveillance system from guests at the restaurant.  Placing a router behind a router is known as “double NAT-ing” and it’s usually not a recommended practice.  A double NAT can cause a variety of problems and it’s more difficult to work with if your network configuration changes.  Basically, it was just time to clean things up.

3pop researched the situation and determined that the existing wireless DSL router provided by the ISP was bridgeable (it could be reconfigured to provide access to the Internet without any routing or firewalling).  3pop then selected a new firewall capable using that bridged Internet connection to provide secure guest wireless access as well as private wireless/wired access to the Internet at the same time.  With this single firewall configuration things were more secure, easier to configure and maintain, and less prone to buggy behavior.  After bridging the DSL router, the firewall was installed and fully configured for use with their credit card processing system, their network printers, and their video surveillance system.

So, if you’re a restaurateur, and you need some Internet action, give 3pop a call and we’ll add a little wireless to your menu!
